Artificial oyster reefs are being built because the natural reefs have been destroyed.
Why they matter to us
For thousands of years oyster reefs have been supplying food and habitat for birds and marine life. Reefs support the growth of essential coastal vegetation like marshes and sea grass beds. Globally 85% of oyster reefs have been lost.
What is Oyster Reef Restoration?
Oyster reef restoration refers to the process of rebuilding or restoring of oyster reefs all over the globe. Over time, oysters have been negatively affected by environmental change, such as harmful fishing techniques, over harvesting and water pollution.
Different types of Artificial Oyster Reefs
Reef Balls are made by pouring concrete into a fiberglass mould containing a central Polyform buoy surrounded by various sized inflatable balls to make holes. Other oyster reefs are just big concrete circles that need to be lifted and placed into the water by a big boat because of how heavy it is.
Why do Oysters need a Reef?
Oyster larvae need a hard surface where they can attach to and continue their development. Much of the hard surface that previously existed in the project areas has been destroyed or covered in sediment.
