What are Oyster Reefs and What affect do they have on the Environment?
Oyster reefs are a marine habitat that have had a massive affect on the environment such as water filtration and habitat for animals. But over the years they have been wiped out, almost to extinction.
What do Oyster Reefs provide for the Enviroment
As previously mentioned, oysters filter the water and create homes for animals causing it to be more attractive for marine life. The increase in marine life would lead to more fish for fisherman to catch. This helps with the sustainability of food because there is a higher amount of food in the area. The same amount of fish are being taking out but more are already there which leads to a sustainable amount of food. Oyster reefs also buffer the waves from the coast and help with the growth of vegetation.
What would Happen without them
Without the oyster reefs the local population of fish is reduced leading to worse business and worse sales. Less oyster reefs also leads to coastal vegetation dying. The fish that are attracted also create food for birds and this keeps the food chain moving .
